What makes Anfield

Liverpool have played at Anfield since the club was founded in 1892. The symbol of the place is the song You'll Never Walk Alone, whose words are also on the club crest.

The famous Kop stand takes its name from Spion Kop, a hill fought over in the Boer War, and Liverpool fans are called the Kop for the same reason. The This Is Anfield sign in the tunnel is something Liverpool players touch for luck, and something meant to intimidate opponents. Games against city rivals Everton are the Merseyside derby.

From Rush to Gerrard

The club's top scorer is Ian Rush, with 346 goals in 660 games, the symbol of Liverpool's 1980s peak. In 2000–01 Liverpool also won a cup Treble of the FA Cup, League Cup and UEFA Cup.

The face of the 2000s was Steven Gerrard. In the 2006 FA Cup final against West Ham, he scored a long-range stoppage-time equaliser at 3–2 down, and Liverpool won on penalties. The game is known as the Gerrard Final. After 17 years at the club, he left for LA Galaxy in 2015.

The Miracle of Istanbul

The 2005 Champions League final is one of football's great comebacks. Liverpool trailed AC Milan 3–0 at half-time, then Gerrard, Šmicer and Alonso scored within six minutes of the second half. In the shootout, Dudek used his spaghetti legs on the line, saved from Pirlo, and stopped Shevchenko's final kick to win it.

Klopp's redemption and Slot's 20th

Jürgen Klopp's Liverpool produced many dramatic nights. In the 2016 Europa League quarter-final against his old club Dortmund, they came from 3–1 down to win 4–3 with Lovren's stoppage-time header. In the 2019 Champions League semi-final, they lost 3–0 at Barcelona, then won 4–0 at Anfield. Origi's finish from Alexander-Arnold's quick corner is still talked about. Liverpool then beat Tottenham 2–0 in the final for their sixth European title.

Smart transfers built the team. The money from selling Coutinho to Barcelona led to the signings of Van Dijk and Alisson, and Salah came from Roma in 2017. In 2019–20, Liverpool clinched their first league title in 30 years with seven games left. In 2021, goalkeeper Alisson headed a stoppage-time winner at West Brom, and in the 2022 League Cup final goalkeeper Kelleher scored as the 11th penalty taker in an 11–10 shootout win.

Klopp's successor, Arne Slot, won the league in his first season, 2024–25. It was Liverpool's 20th league title, drawing level with Manchester United.
